Hmm, if you actually disliked Le rouge et le noir then it may not be worth trying more Stendhal. I think La chartreuse de Parme is better, but it's similar, if you see what I mean. If you want to read more French, how about Un long dimanche de fiançailles, by Sébastien Japrisot? It's the book on which the film A very long engagement was based, but it is much better than the film.
