Downgrading of the Maccabees' Reputation

According to Simon Sebag Montefiore (Jerusalem, p. 70), "The Jews nicknamed him [sc. Alexander Jannaeus, 103-76 BCE] the Thracian for his barbarism and his army of Greek mercenaries."
